Simple Forms, Striking Effects
Allium flowers are known for their charming, round blooms. Their smooth, elongated stems are also a distinctive feature, helping to highlight the spherical shape. Natural curves and subtle twists in the stems add character, revealing the playful side of nature. In ikebana, these qualities make allium flowers ideal for creating simple forms with striking effects—especially when choosing between the upright and slanting basic patterns.
To bring out the beauty of this flower, which basic design pattern works best?In most cases, upright or slanting styles are more suitable than a horizontal placement, which tends to visually shorten the stem.
If the stem has an interesting curve, placing it upright can help emphasise that shape and bring out its individuality.
Even when placing the stem upright, the overall impression can change significantly depending on how the flowers are positioned, whether you cross the stems at the top, or by facing it in the opposite direction or keep them parallel in the same direction.
Choosing Complementary Materials
Selecting the right materials to pair with allium is also important. To highlight the simplicity and uniqueness of its form, it’s best to avoid including too many elements.
To emphasise length, choose other long materials that create a sense of harmony. Alternatively, adding a bold element such as a monstera leaf can create visual contrast and help emphasise the distinct characteristics of each component.

These certainly are striking arrangements and created with so few materials. I especially love the use of red dogwood . As always, the guidelines are so clear and helpful.
Thank you, Azumi, just the thing for a winter’s day😊🙏M
